Budgeting for Tech

The adage “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” may have applications in many areas of life, but your tech system is not one of them! Old, not-exactly-broken systems slow down operations, frustrate your team, and distract from efficiency and quality outcomes.

Here are some common factors to consider when evaluating your tech operation:

  • 1

    Staff network wifi upgrade.
Improve coverage for wireless devices like handhelds, med pass, etc.—including resident rooms, since those devices are often used for care delivery.

  • 2

    Resident room wifi ugrade.
Most residents prefer not to contract directly with internet carriers themselves, so providing a dedicated resident network can accommodate them. Having a robust wifi network will also improve real-time delivery of e-call alerts.

  • 3

    Updated phone system.
If you don’t already have a good VOiP system, now is the time. Make sure it is easily configurable and has a backup circuit in case of outage.

  • 4

    Carrier services evaluation.
Give us all your bills (phone, internet, TV, backup circuit) and we’ll run a diagnostic to identify opportunities for improvements in performance and the bottom line.

  • 5

    Digital signage.
A good system can make resident and team member engagement communication and engagement a breeze. Invest in a good system or upgrade your outdated one. Consider budgeting for professional content creation and coordination as well!

  • 6

    Audio system.
A concise system can make a huge difference. Control sound (and video!) for in-person and CCTV/in-room viewing. Simple enough for any staff or resident to use.

  • 7

    Camera system.
Consider more cameras or a new system. It can be a huge challenge to manage a “frankenware” system, cobbled together with equipment from various eras. A fully
digital system offers more reliability and flexibility–even apps so the ED can check on the community from home!

It’s smart to periodically assess your technology and systems—instead of waiting for something to “break.” Investing strategically can give your teams capabilities that make your operation run more smoothly and efficiently—to give you demonstratable ROI!
